Self-Portraits: Artist Research Responses to Teaching (ARRT)
This series of ten self-portraits forms part of my Doctor of Creative Arts research, using drawing as a method to reflect on identity, teaching, and artistic practice in rural Queensland. Created through my ARRT (Artist Research Responses to Teaching) framework, each artwork responds to insights drawn from earlier teacher portraits and interviews with educators.
The self-portraits explore themes of resilience, imagination, and the evolving role of Visual Arts in primary education. Symbolism, fragmentation, and role-play are used to construct personal avatars that blur the line between reality and representation. Each piece is grounded in traditional drawing methods, while remaining open to narrative, emotion, and the uncanny.
These portraits offer more than self-reflection; they act as visual research tools, uncovering shared experiences and challenging perceptions of identity and value within Visual Arts education
